We could have been rid of Christine ‘I am not a Witch’ O’Donnell far easier, and instead of having to stomach her campaign ads, subject her to a Care Bears film. Who knew. Massachusetts Republican Sandi Martinez is running for a seat in the State Senate. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
According to the Lowell Sun and the Boston Globe, Martinez embraces beliefs surrounding right wing Christianity — which venture right off that crazy cliff. Martinez once hosted an access TV show where she has proclaimed that 1980s children’s shows such as “The Smurfs” and “The Care Bears” can lure children into witchcraft – which, according to candidate Martinez, is promoted in public schools. Martinez has also claimed Christianity can turn gays straight — the latter being a view embraced by Michele Bachmann, and other politicians in the far right wing.
According to an October 19, 2010 Boston Globe story,
“On her cable access show in 2004, Martinez warned that trick-or-treating, Harry Potter books, and the “new age images” presented in 1980s-era programming such as “The Smurfs” and “The Care Bears” could destigmatize the occult and leave children vulnerable to the lure of witchcraft.

“To me, that’s what the Harry Potter thing is doing, only in a much broader scale than the Smurfs ever did,” she said. “The children are going to remember those feelings that they had watching the movies and reading the books, and they’re going to be prime targets.” “
According to the Lowell Sun:
“In one segment of the show, called “Speak Out!”, Martinez seems to imply homosexuals have empty and meaningless lives, and protests how Christmas has been taken out of schools along with other religious symbols, but witchcraft has been introduced into classrooms.
(My bold, her insanity)
Vote Wisely.
Alternet delves into this more.
“I proclaim publicly that I favor ending government involvement in education.” – that was a statement Martinez signed. Privatizing education is another popular Conservative view that Martinez has in common with her base. Sarah Palin’s Evangelical views are also a commonality. The extreme faction permeating the GOP has fallen in lockstep with Tea Partiers and far right wing Christian views, which divide America while at the same time, they’re shooting themselves in the foot. There will be a time and hopefully soon, where American voters will say, Enough! But, until then, they’re hoping to dumb down the masses with Fox News, privatized education while revising history to their liking.
